About Us

the beginning…

The Climate Consensus began in 2014 at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (formerly Lyndon State College) when two Atmospheric Sciences students approached their professor with a desire to improve climate change literacy. Students, faculty, and staff began meeting regularly to discuss the climate crisis and to explore ways to communicate the urgency of the situation to the public. The group has since engaged with schools, community members, and organizations throughout Vermont and the surrounding region.

In 2021, the group expanded to include students and scientists from other universities and organizations. These representatives met regularly to discuss how they and others at their home institutions are engaging in climate outreach; sharing resources and best practices, learning from each other’s successes and failures, and providing mutual technical and moral support.

In 2024, in addition to university chapters, The Climate Consensus expanded even further to include scientists across all sectors who are concerned about the consequences of unmitigated climate change. In addition to holding regular representative meetings, members are now participating in a variety of committees to advance the mission of the organization. These are the digital engagement, events and outreach, and fundraising committee.

We recognize that many people in the general public do not understand the urgency of the crisis or appreciate the high level of agreement among experts regarding the cause. Only when people have a clear understanding of our own role in the transformation of our climate will we construct a meaningful course of action to correct it.
