About us
We understand that climate change is real. We understand that it is human-caused. We believe that something must be done about it—and nearly all of the world's climate scientists agree.
The Climate Consensus is a growing network of current and upcoming scientists from both teaching- and research-focused universities who are concerned about the consequences of unmitigated climate change. We recognize that many people in the general public do not understand the urgency of the crisis or appreciate the high level of agreement among experts regarding the cause. Only when people have a clear understanding of our own role in the transformation of our climate will we construct a meaningful course of action to correct it.
Our vision is to close the consensus gap between experts and non-experts on the subject of human-caused climate change by promoting effective dialog between scientists and the community.
Our mission is to support, encourage, and inspire current and upcoming scientists to engage in dialog with their local communities. We are building capacity for outreach and establishing pipelines between social and physical scientists to create a culture shift within academia and the broader science community.
The Climate Consensus network currently has representatives from 12 universities.
We are a vermont-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
Our network is growing. Meet some of our members who previously served as climate champions, representatives, and student leaders.
Our story
The Climate Consensus began in 2014 at Northern Vermont University-Lyndon (formerly Lyndon State College) when two Atmospheric Sciences students approached their professor with a desire to improve climate change literacy. Students, faculty, and staff began meeting regularly to discuss the climate crisis and to explore ways to communicate the urgency of the situation to the public. The group has since engaged with schools, community members, and organizations around Vermont and the surrounding region.
In 2021, the group expanded to include students and scientists from other universities and organizations. These representatives now meet regularly to discuss how they and others at their home institutions are engaging in climate outreach. They are sharing resources and best practices, learning from each other’s successes and failures, and providing mutual technical and moral support. Stay tuned to see how we continue to grow. Together, we can change the climate conversation and motivate real action.
